At the beginning of the 20th century, Dr. Ruy D’Andrade, zoologist, anatomist, horse breeder and paleontologist, father of Eng. Fernando Sommer D’Andrade, embarked upon a vast and important horse breeding and selection project which has been welcomed and recognized by all Lusitano horse enthusiasts.

He dedicated great part of his life to the portuguese native breeds, such as the Lusitano horse, the Sorraia horse, the Garrano horse and the donkey, on which he wrote important studies. He was to whom the Portuguese state handed over the creation of the Coudelaria Nacional (Portuguese National Stud), and the protection of Alter Real Stud. As he kept and raised these two studs, he also applied his knowledge to select the horses with which the founded his own stud.
“He was a prominent and successful breeder of Lusitano horses. His line of horses is still one of the two most prominent and popular lines in the Lusitano breed.”

This was the genetic patrimony that his son, Eng. Fernando Sommer D’Andrade, inherited and continued with wisdom, obtaining many prizes and distinctions, and breeding the great horses whose blood continues in many studs.
“[…] he started from a solid morphological basis, then looking for retaining the more subtle qualities.”

“… they are strong, short horses, brave with the bulls, burning if provoked and calm if not excited, fast in the race and rapid on turns and with good step, sensible to the spur, submissive with good mouth, endless , resistant to everything … “

Os Andrades, como são conhecidos os cavalos da coudelaria do Eng. Fernando Sommer D’Andrade, são assim fruto de muita dedicação e saber, selecionados com critérios de excelência, apreciados pe
The “Andrades”, as the horses bred in Eng. Sommer D’Andrade’s stud are affectionately known, are the end product of a great deal of devotion and knowledge, selected with excellence criteria. They are valued for their movements, forms, temperament and multiplicity of aptitudes in diverse equitation areas, such as dressage, bullfighting, jumps and, more recently, the working equitation.
The Stud D’Andrade is a symbolic and historic milestone in Lusitano horse breeding.
When Eng. Sommer D’Andrade died,in 1991, his stud was split up among his daughter and sons. Maria D’Andrade de Oliveira e Sousa, his daughter, maintains her mares and horses and their respective descent in Herdade da Agolada de Baixo, her estate in Coruche. In her stud it is maintained the “purity” of the Andrades, by using stallions of this bloodline such as Curul, Farsante, Dayak and Oboé, son and grandsons of Martini, Galan, son of Dragão, Faneca and Marujo, son and grandson of Zamorim.
They are strong and resistant horses, very intelligent and extremely versatile. They are noble to lead and generous at work.

This is a highly traditional stud endeavoring to take full advantage, in the present, of its prestigious past.
